Artwork Description

Paul Delaroche’s deeply moving 1824 masterpiece "Jeanne d’Arc malade est interrogée dans sa prison par le cardinal de Winchester" portrays the imprisoned Joan of Arc in Rouen in 1431, weakened by illness and chains, yet radiating quiet defiance as she is interrogated by the powerful Cardinal Henry Beaufort, Bishop of Winchester. Seated on a straw-covered stone bench in her dim cell, the young Maid of Orléans turns her gaze upward with spiritual intensity while the scarlet-robed cardinal leans forward menacingly, clutching a document. The stark contrast between Joan’s luminous simplicity and the cardinal’s opulent authority creates one of the most emotionally charged depictions of her final months.

Striking centrepiece for a study, library, or contemplative interior; a profound gift for admirers of French history, female heroism, or intense Romantic historical drama.
